Another psycho makes the list

Look, I’ve been working at this place for over a year. I know my stuff, okay? I know what’s what here and I don’t like people questioning that. Moreover, I don’t like being talked to like I’m 16. I don’t know any adult who appreciates that; and the resentment towards it grows as one gets farther away from that lovely age.

This woman wanted to buy a pearl bracelet. We have two that are broken. I knew that already. Like I said, I know my stuff. To save the hassle of explaining this to the customer -and trust me, it’s a hassle to explain anything to a customer- I simply told her we have none left.

She asks “What about the display?”

“I can’t sell you the display. It’s al–”

“You won’t sell me the display, but you’re willing to loose a sale?” She said this in, what is quite possibly, the most condescending tone I had ever heard in my life.

First of all, that is terrible sentence construction. “But” had no place in that sentence. “And” would have worked, however “but” is a term that implies some sort of contradiction. There is no contradiction. I won’t sell her the display and I’m willing to loose a sale over that. I’m not perfect with grammar, but my sentences, generally, tend to make sense.

Secondly, Fuck you bitch. Let me finish my damn sentence, you psycho. So, after getting a grip on my urge to kick this woman in the face, I told her “Ma’am, the display is engraved.”

“Where? Where is it engraved? I don’t see an engraving.”

‘Right, because I’m sure you know sooo much more about this place than I possibly could.’

I grabbed my keys, opening the display, and proceeded to to attempt to twist the bracelet around on the stand that was holding it. As I’m doing this she says “Don’t break it young girl.”

What was that? A combination of “Little girl” and “Young lady”? It was like a double whammy insult.

I pulled my hand out of the display, shut the case, walked back inside the kiosk, and pulled out the two broken bracelets, and showed her the charm that was supposed to be on them. “These are the bracelets. This is the heart that dangles off them. The display has one, and it’s engraved.”

She said “Oh. Well thank you.” and walked away. Probably for the best.

One of the most insulting things you can do to a person in retail is assume they don’t know what they’re talking about. No. You walk up there and assume someone knows what they’re doing. That’s what they’re paid for. To know what they’re doing.
